White Pines State Park in
Northwestern Illinois, is less than two hours from Chicago but a world
apart. The rustic log lodge, cabins, and picnic shelters were built by the
Civilian Conservation Corps
in the early 1930's. Some of the logs used in construction are up to 70
feet long. Native fieldstone was used to create the massive fireplaces in
the restaurant and gift shop. Instead of bridges a less expensive method
known as fords was created to cross the creeks. Two of these fords are
still in use today. |
